SWACCH BHARAT ABHIYAAN (Cleanliness drive)

PROJECT AIM:

The aim of this initiative was to raise public awareness about the importance of cleanliness and to promote a collective sense of responsibility towards maintaining a hygienic and sustainable urban environment. The project also intended to enhance public health by reducing litter in one of Kolkata’s most frequently visited public spaces.

PROJECT SUMMARY:

The cleanliness drive was successfully conducted at Maidan, Kolkata on August 19, 2023 under the leadership of Suraj Kr. Midya. The initiative was part of the national Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan movement and targeted environmental consciousness and civic engagement.

Key Highlights:

  • Reporting time: 10:00 A.M. at Maidan Metro Station (Gate No. 1)
  • Total volunteers planned: 5; Participated: 4 (due to last-minute dropout)
  • The drive commenced by 10:15 A.M.
  • Approximately 55 kilograms of waste were collected within the designated area

The activity emphasized the visible lack of a proper waste disposal infrastructure in the Maidan region. Despite being a popular public hangout zone, the absence of dustbins in accessible locations led to indiscriminate dumping by the public. This issue was acknowledged as a major barrier to cleanliness, and a recommendation was made to the relevant authorities for the installation of dustbins in strategic zones.

To extend the reach and impact of the drive, the team used social media platforms to share updates, photos, and calls to action, encouraging others to participate in future initiatives.

IMPACT:

  • Raised awareness among citizens and passersby on the importance of a clean environment
  • Instilled a sense of social responsibility in volunteers and participants
  • Helped identify structural gaps in the current public waste management system
  • Initiated a call for civic action and government intervention for better maintenance

CONCLUSION:

Despite a few setbacks, the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan Cleanliness Drive at Maidan was a valuable learning experience and a small but significant contribution towards a cleaner Kolkata. The volunteers showed exceptional dedication, and the team was successful in collecting a substantial amount of waste.

The project underscored two major takeaways:

  1. The need for better volunteer reliability and preparedness
  2. The urgent requirement for functional and accessible waste disposal infrastructure

Going forward, the foundation plans to scale up these drives, engage more community members, and collaborate with local authorities for higher impact. Through consistent efforts, such initiatives can lead to a cleaner, greener, and more responsible society.
