Mask Distribution Drive

Aim of the Project
The Mask Distribution Drive, conducted on Friday, August 21, 2021, aimed to promote continued public awareness regarding the importance of wearing masks and maintaining hygiene practices, even as the immediate threat of COVID-19 appeared to decline. The initiative focused on encouraging responsible behavior in public spaces by distributing surgical masks and sanitizer pouches among vulnerable and high-contact groups.

What We Achieved
Led by Project Head Suraj Kr. Midya and approved by Ms. Riyanka Acharjee, this awareness and distribution drive was successfully executed in Madhyamgram, covering key public hubs such as markets, roadsides, and local colonies. With a sanctioned budget of ₹14,000 (plus ₹2,000 contingency), the project delivered both tangible health resources and crucial public education.

The initiative specifically reached:

  • Shopkeepers, vendors, fruit and vegetable sellers
  • Auto, rickshaw, and van drivers
  • General public and pedestrians
  • Roadside beggars and economically disadvantaged individuals

Distribution Impact:

  • 1,500+ masks distributed
  • 2,200+ sanitiser pouches handed out
  • Additional 400 masks & 400 pouches distributed by volunteers in their local neighborhoods

The volunteers strategically covered major stretches from Madhyamgram Chowmatha to:

  • Madhyamgram Station
  • Badu Road
  • New Barrackpore More
  • Madhyamgram Bazar and adjoining colonies

The team also offered a square meal to those in extreme need, including beggars and roadside dwellers—amplifying the human impact of this outreach.

Key Outcomes & Project Highlights

  • High Community Engagement: People appreciated the gesture and understood the importance of continuing COVID-preventive measures.
  • Targeted Awareness: Focused outreach to high-contact groups ensured the message reached those most likely to affect transmission rates.
  • Volunteer Empowerment: Volunteers were not only active in field distribution but also carried the message forward into their own neighborhoods—amplifying the reach and longevity of the initiative.
  • Compassion-Driven Support: Though this was not a fundraiser, a few people, moved by the initiative, offered support and showed interest in future involvement.

Conclusion
The Mask Distribution Drive successfully reinforced the message that public safety and health consciousness must persist beyond the peak of a pandemic. It proved that grassroots efforts, even with modest budgets, can create powerful community change when guided by empathy, strategic planning, and direct engagement. By blending education with action, Rigel Foundation once again demonstrated its ability to respond meaningfully to public needs—building not just awareness, but trust and goodwill across the community.
