Maa Initiative: Part 2 – Debate and Presentation Competition

PROJECT AIM
The primary objective of this initiative was to conduct a debate and presentation competition focused on women’s sanitation, specifically menstruation and hygiene. By engaging young minds in thought-provoking discussions and presentations, the event aimed to break taboos, foster awareness, and contribute to a more informed and supportive society for women.

PROJECT SUMMARY
This groundbreaking event marked Kolkata’s first-ever debate and presentation competition dedicated to menstrual health and hygiene. It successfully brought together around 120 students from various schools, competing in debate and presentation categories. The event aimed to dismantle social stigmas surrounding menstruation and encourage open discussions on menstrual health.

A team of 16 dedicated interns from Khudiram Bose College played a pivotal role in organizing this initiative. They undertook diverse responsibilities, from school outreach and event coordination to digital design and logistics management. The Rigel Foundation provided essential support, with Suchana efficiently managing backstage operations and Priyoum Dhar contributing significantly to ensuring a seamless event execution. The esteemed founders of the Rigel Foundation, Suvaiyu Saha and Shounok Guha, served as judges, lending their expertise and support to the event.

A notable moment during the event was the role of Miss Pragya Nath, who stepped in as the anchor at the last moment due to an intern experiencing stage fright. Her poised and confident delivery ensured the smooth flow of the event. Additionally, both branch presidents of the Rigel Foundation attended as honorary heads, adding further credibility and significance to the occasion.

Our outreach extended beyond schools, with successful engagement from local authorities, including invitations to a councillor, a police inspector, and a medical officer. While only the police inspector was able to attend, this engagement set a precedent for future collaborations with key stakeholders.
